For which anniversary is wood the traditional gift ?
Its the traditional gift for the 5th anniversary.
What is Spalting ?
Spalting is the beginning of the process where a log rots and breaks down to return to the forest floor. Fungi begin to enter the wood and penetrate deeply into it, the lines of penetration can be in wide bands or pencil thin lines and although most often black, other colours are not uncommon . Beech, Maple, Hornbeam and Ash have the most dramatic spalting, though it can occasionally be found in other woods. Spalting stops when the wood is cut and dried, however the lines and patterns are permanent.
If you wish to learn more about the subject of Spalting then the following article's maybe of interest to you - Spalting a Fungus Amongus.
Do you use imported or endangered species ?
I never use endangered species. Though very occasionally I have used Australian Burrs Which are imported into the UK under a strict licence.
Do you want some wood ?
I certainly have no wish to sound picky but the answer would probably depend on the following. What species, volume and distance.
As stated previously my favourites are Yew, Walnut, Mulberry, Monkey Puzzle. Apple, Plum. And any spalted timber. (see “what is spalting" above) Though there are a good many other English timbers that may also be of interest.
However please contact me with details. I would be happy to make a bowl or vase from it for you and would whenever possible prefer to turn it than burn it !!
